Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi

Ibrahim Awwad Ibrahim Ali al-Badri, known as Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, was born on July 28, 1971, in Samarra, Iraq. He pursued graduate studies in Islamic theology during the late 1990s and early 2000s, reportedly earning a PhD from the Islamic University of Baghdad. His academic background laid the foundation for his later role as a militant leader.

Following the American invasion of Iraq in March 2003, Baghdadi emerged as a prominent figure in the insurgency, leading the Jama'at Jaysh Ahl al-Sunna wal-Jama'ah group. He was detained at Camp Bucca in 2004 alongside al-Qaeda commanders. By 2010, he had ascended to the position of emir of the Islamic State of Iraq, a group that evolved into the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL) in 2013, and later simply the Islamic State in 2014, when he declared himself caliph.

Under Baghdadi's leadership, the Islamic State engaged in brutal campaigns across Iraq and Syria, employing tactics such as mass executions, suicide bombings, and the systematic use of sexual violence. His tenure was marked by the genocide of the Yazidi people and the establishment of a caliphate that briefly controlled significant territories before suffering substantial losses.

On October 27, 2019, Baghdadi died by suicide during a U.S. raid in Idlib Province, Syria. His death marked the end of a controversial and violent chapter in modern history, as he left behind a legacy of terror and brutality. Following his demise, the Islamic State confirmed his death and appointed Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurashi as his successor.
