Abu Yusuf Yaqub ibn Abd al-Haqq, born around the year twelve hundred twelve, was a prominent Marinid ruler and military leader. As the fourth son of the Marinid dynasty's founder, Abd al-Haqq I, he ascended to the throne in the year twelve fifty-eight following the reign of his brother, Abu Yahya. His leadership marked a significant period in the history of the Marinid dynasty.
Yaqub's lineage is notable; he was the son of Abd al-Haqq I and Oum el-Iman bint Ali el-Bethary, a woman of Zenata descent. This connection to the Zenata people enriched his heritage and influence within the region. Some historical accounts also refer to his mother as Oum el Youm, indicating her ties to a clan leader from the Tafersit area, further emphasizing the importance of familial alliances in his rule.
Throughout his reign, which lasted until his death on the twentieth of March in the year twelve eighty-six, Yaqub played a crucial role in shaping the political landscape of his time. His military leadership and governance were pivotal in maintaining the strength and stability of the Marinid dynasty during a period of significant change and challenge.
