Abubakar Shekau

Abubakar Shekau, born on March twenty-four, nineteen seventy-three, was a notorious Nigerian militant who rose to infamy as the leader of Boko Haram, an extremist group operating in northeastern Nigeria. His leadership spanned from two thousand nine until his death in two thousand twenty-one, following a tumultuous career that began as the deputy to the group's founder, Mohammed Yusuf, until Yusuf's execution by Nigerian police in the same year.

Initially believed to have been killed during clashes with security forces in two thousand nine, Shekau resurfaced in July two thousand ten, asserting his leadership through a video. His tenure was marked by a series of reports claiming his death, leading to speculation that he employed doubles to maintain his presence and influence.

Shekau's reign was marred by severe human rights violations, including acts of terrorism, bombings, forced conversions, and kidnappings, drawing widespread condemnation from human rights advocates. In March two thousand fifteen, he pledged allegiance to ISIL leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, but by two thousand sixteen, tensions arose as ISIS Central attempted to replace him with Abu Musab al-Barnawi, resulting in a significant split within the group.

Despite his initial alignment with ISIL, Shekau distanced himself from the organization in two thousand sixteen, leading to deteriorating relations. This culminated in a major operation launched by ISIS against Shekau and his loyalists in two thousand twenty-one. Ultimately, on May nineteenth, two thousand twenty-one, he took his own life by detonating a suicide vest during a confrontation in Sambisa Forest, marking the end of a controversial and violent chapter in Nigeria's history.
