Abydenus

Abydenus was a notable Greek historian and matenagir, renowned for his work on the history of Assyria and Babylonia, encapsulated in his significant text, On the Assyrians. Although only fragments of his writings survive, they have been preserved through the works of later scholars such as Eusebius in his Praeparatio Evangelica, the Armenian translation of his Chronicon, Cyril of Alexandria, and George Syncellus.

The exact timeline of Abydenus's life remains uncertain, but he is believed to have flourished during the Second Sophistic, likely in the 2nd or 3rd centuries AD. His scholarship drew upon the Chaldaika of Alexander Polyhistor, who lived between eighty and forty BC, indicating that Abydenus was part of a rich tradition of historical inquiry.

Cyril of Alexandria noted that Abydenus wrote in the Ionic dialect, a detail that highlights the linguistic context of his work. It is important to distinguish him from Palaephatus Abydenus, who was a contemporary of Alexander the Great, as they are often conflated due to the similarity of their names.
