AC/DC, the iconic Australian rock band, was established in Sydney in nineteen seventy-three by brothers Angus and Malcolm Young. Known for their electrifying sound, the band has been described as hard rock, blues rock, and heavy metal, although they prefer to label their music simply as 'rock and roll.' With a profound influence on the new wave of British heavy metal, AC/DC has solidified its place in music history.
The band's journey began with a lineup that included Colin Burgess on drums, Larry Van Kriedt on bass guitar, and Dave Evans as the lead vocalist. Their debut album, High Voltage, was released in nineteen seventy-five, but it was the release of Let There Be Rock in nineteen seventy-seven that marked a turning point, stabilizing the lineup with Phil Rudd on drums, Cliff Williams on bass, and Bon Scott as the lead vocalist. Tragically, Scott passed away from alcohol poisoning shortly after the release of Highway to Hell in nineteen seventy-nine, leading to the recruitment of English singer Brian Johnson.
With Johnson at the helm, AC/DC released Back in Black in nineteen eighty, an album dedicated to Scott's memory that became the second best-selling album of all time. Their subsequent albums, including For Those About to Rock in nineteen eighty-one, continued to achieve commercial success. The band faced challenges in the early nineteen eighties, including lineup changes, but they experienced a resurgence in the early nineties with The Razors Edge in nineteen ninety, which was the only album to feature drummer Chris Slade.
After a series of successful albums, including Black Ice in two thousand eight, the band's lineup remained stable for two decades until Malcolm Young's retirement in two thousand fourteen due to early-onset dementia, which ultimately led to his passing three years later. Angus and Malcolm's nephew, Stevie Young, stepped in to fill Malcolm's role, debuting on the album Rock or Bust in two thousand fourteen. The band faced further changes, including Axl Rose temporarily replacing Johnson during a tour, but they announced a reunion of the Rock or Bust lineup in September two thousand twenty, culminating in the release of their seventeenth studio album, Power Up, in November of the same year.
