Adam Exner, born on December twenty-fourth, nineteen twenty-eight, was a prominent figure in the Canadian Catholic Church, serving as a bishop and later as the Archbishop of Vancouver from nineteen ninety-one until two thousand four.
Raised in Saskatchewan, Exner completed his secondary education before entering the Oblate novitiate near Winnipeg. His theological journey took him to the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, where he studied for the priesthood and was ordained in nineteen fifty-seven.
After returning to Canada, he earned a doctoral degree in moral theology and dedicated himself to teaching at various seminaries in his home province and Alberta. His ecclesiastical career began in earnest when he was appointed Bishop of Kamloops in nineteen seventy-four, a role he was consecrated into that same year.
Exner's leadership continued to flourish as he became the Archbishop of Winnipeg eight years later, a position he held for nearly a decade before his transfer to Vancouver in nineteen ninety-one. Notably, he was recognized for initiating the first diocesan synod in Vancouver, which allowed for significant lay participation.
