As a member of the Kreisau Circle, alongside notable figures such as Helmuth James Graf von Moltke and Peter Yorck von Wartenburg, von Trott zu Solz engaged in intellectual discussions and strategic planning aimed at undermining the totalitarian state. His commitment to these ideals placed him at the forefront of the resistance movement.

In a bold act of defiance, he participated in the infamous July twentieth plot, collaborating with conspirators like Claus von Stauffenberg and Fritz-Dietlof von der Schulenburg. Had the plot succeeded, von Trott zu Solz was slated to assume the role of Secretary of State in the German Foreign Office, where he would have served as the lead negotiator with the Western Allies.
