Adda of Bernicia

Adda of Bernicia, born in the year five hundred and one, was the third known ruler of the Anglo-Saxon Kingdom of Bernicia. He was one of several sons of Ida, the kingdom's first ruler, and succeeded by Æthelric. His reign is shrouded in some mystery, particularly regarding his involvement in significant battles.

One notable event associated with Adda is the battle of Caer Greu, where the British kings Peredur and Gwrgi of Ebrauc met their demise. However, historical records present conflicting accounts. The Annales Cambriae suggest that this battle occurred in the year five hundred and eighty, while the Welsh Triads mistakenly attribute the leadership in this battle to Ida, who had already passed away in five hundred and fifty-nine.

Historians speculate that the Triads may have intended to refer to Adda, given the similarity of their names. The Historia Brittonum indicates that Adda's reign lasted for eight years following Ida's death, leading to further confusion regarding the identity of the Bernician leader at Caer Greu. It is also possible that Ælle of Deira commanded the Angles during this conflict, as Ebrauc ceased to exist as a British kingdom afterward, with Deira absorbing its territory.

Despite the uncertainties surrounding his life and reign, Adda's legacy remains a part of the complex tapestry of early Anglo-Saxon history. The details of his rule and the events of his time are often debated among scholars, highlighting the challenges of reconstructing the past.
