Adela of Normandy

Adela of Normandy, born around 1067, was a prominent figure in the medieval aristocracy, known for her lineage as the daughter of William the Conqueror and Matilda of Flanders. Her noble heritage positioned her as a significant player in the political landscape of her time.

Through her marriage to Stephen II of Blois, Adela became the countess of Blois, Chartres, and Meaux. This union not only elevated her husband's social standing but also intertwined their fates with the powerful Norman dynasty, setting the stage for future conflicts in the Anglo-Norman territories.

Adela's influence extended beyond her marriage; she served as regent of Blois during her husband's absences from 1096 to 1100 and again from 1101 to 1102. Furthermore, she took on the role of regent during her son's minority from 1102 until 1120, showcasing her political acumen and leadership during turbulent times.

As the mother of King Stephen of England, Adela played a pivotal role in the dynastic struggles of her era. Her son's ascension to the throne, at the expense of her niece Empress Matilda, ignited the civil war known as The Anarchy, marking a significant chapter in English history.
