Adelaide Sinclair

Adelaide Sinclair, born on January sixteenth, nineteen hundred in Toronto, Ontario, was a distinguished Canadian civil servant whose career spanned several decades. She was the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Overton Macdonald and received her education at Havergal College. Sinclair earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from University College, University of Toronto in nineteen twenty-two, followed by a Master of Arts in nineteen twenty-five. Her academic journey included post-graduate studies at the London School of Economics and the University of Berlin.

In nineteen thirty, she married Donald Black Sinclair, a Toronto lawyer, but the couple had no children. During World War II, she took on a significant role as the Director and temporary Commander of the Women's Royal Canadian Naval Service (WRCNS), where her leadership earned her recognition as an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in the New Year Honours of nineteen forty-five for her exceptional organizational skills.

After the war, Sinclair continued her public service as the executive assistant to the Deputy Minister of National Health and Welfare and served as the Canadian representative to UNICEF from nineteen forty-six to nineteen fifty-seven. She then held the position of Deputy Director of UNICEF until her retirement in nineteen sixty-seven, becoming one of the highest-ranking women at the United Nations.

Her contributions to public service were further acknowledged when she was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in nineteen sixty-seven. In nineteen sixty-eight, she received an honorary degree from the University of British Columbia, solidifying her legacy as a trailblazer in civil service and international humanitarian efforts.
