Adolfas Ramanauskas

Adolfas Ramanauskas, born on March 6, 1918, in the United States to Lithuanian immigrant parents, returned to Lithuania at the tender age of three. His early life was marked by a commitment to education, and he worked as a teacher during the tumultuous periods of Soviet and German occupations throughout World War II.

As Lithuania faced re-occupation by the Soviet Union in 1944, Ramanauskas found himself at a crossroads. Pressured by the NKVD to spy on his own students, he chose instead to join the anti-Soviet resistance. His dedication and leadership quickly propelled him through the ranks, ultimately becoming the chairman of the Union of Lithuanian Freedom Fighters.

Tragically, in 1956, Ramanauskas was betrayed by a former classmate, leading to his arrest. He endured brutal torture before being executed, marking him as the last known partisan commander to be captured. His legacy as a leader in the fight for Lithuanian freedom remains significant.

In 2018, the Seimas of Lithuania posthumously honored him as the Head of State of Lithuania, recognizing his contributions to the nation's struggle for independence. However, his memory has been met with controversy, particularly surrounding the memorial erected in Chicago in 2019, which faced protests from various organizations alleging his collaboration with the Nazis during the Holocaust. The Lithuanian government has firmly denied these claims, asserting that no historical evidence supports such allegations.
