Adolfo Nicolás

Adolfo Nicolás, born on April twenty-ninth, nineteen thirty-six, was a distinguished Spanish Catholic priest and educator. He dedicated a significant portion of his life to teaching at Sophia University in Tokyo, where he influenced countless students over a span of twenty years. His commitment to education extended beyond Japan, as he also led various educational institutions in Manila from nineteen seventy-eight to nineteen eighty-four and in Tokyo from nineteen ninety-one to nineteen ninety-three.

Nicolás's leadership within the Society of Jesus was marked by his tenure as the thirtieth superior general from two thousand eight to two thousand sixteen. His journey in the Jesuit community began with his role as the leader of the Jesuits in Japan from nineteen ninety-three to nineteen ninety-six. Following this, he engaged in pastoral work in Tokyo for four years before taking on the responsibility of leading the Jesuits in Asia from two thousand four to two thousand eight.

Despite being elected superior general for life, Nicolás chose to resign, a decision that echoed the precedent set by his predecessor, Peter Hans Kolvenbach. This choice reflects the flexibility allowed by the Jesuit constitutions, demonstrating his commitment to the values of the Society of Jesus.
