Adriaan van Maanen

Adriaan van Maanen, a distinguished Dutch-American astronomer, was born on March thirty-first, eighteen eighty-four, in Friesland. He pursued his passion for astronomy at the University of Utrecht, where he earned his Ph.D. in nineteen eleven. Following a brief tenure at the University of Groningen, he made a significant move to the United States, initially volunteering at Yerkes Observatory.

Within a year of his arrival, van Maanen secured a position at the renowned Mount Wilson Observatory, where he dedicated his career until his passing in nineteen forty-six. His work primarily focused on astrometric measurements of spiral nebulae, which he believed demonstrated internal motions, suggesting these celestial bodies were local systems within our galaxy.

However, his findings were at odds with Edwin Hubble's groundbreaking discovery that the Andromeda Nebula and other spiral nebulae were, in fact, extragalactic. Van Maanen's calculations indicated that if Hubble's theory were correct, the Cepheid stars within these nebulae would be moving at speeds exceeding that of light. Ultimately, his astrometric measurements were later deemed erroneous.

In recognition of his contributions to the field, van Maanen became a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences in nineteen twenty-four, solidifying his legacy in the astronomical community.
