Adrian Mutu

Adrian Mutu, born on January 8, 1979, is a renowned Romanian football manager and former professional player, celebrated for his versatility as a forward and attacking midfielder. His football journey began at Argeș Pitești, where he spent two years, followed by a brief stint at Dinamo București. In 1999, he made a significant move to Italy, joining Inter Milan midway through the Serie A season, although his time there was short-lived, featuring in only ten matches.

After leaving Inter, Mutu found his footing at Hellas Verona and later at Parma, where he showcased his scoring prowess by netting thirty-nine goals over three seasons. His remarkable performance earned him a lucrative transfer to Chelsea for twenty-two point five million euros and a nomination for the prestigious Ballon d'Or in 2003. However, his career faced a major setback due to a positive drug test, leading to his release from Chelsea and a subsequent seven-month ban from the Football Association.

Following his departure from Chelsea, Mutu returned to Serie A, joining Juventus. However, after the infamous Italian football scandal in 2006, which resulted in Juventus's relegation to Serie B, he opted to sign with Fiorentina. His five-year tenure at Fiorentina was marked by consistent performances, after which he played for Cesena and Ajaccio in France before returning to Romania with Petrolul Ploiești in 2014. He concluded his professional playing career in 2016 after brief spells with Pune City and ASA Târgu Mureș.

Off the pitch, Mutu has been a controversial figure, particularly due to his positive cocaine test while at Chelsea, which led to a record financial penalty of fifteen point two million pounds, the largest in FIFA history. Despite multiple attempts to appeal this fine, he faced another ban in 2010 for testing positive for sibutramine while at Fiorentina. On the international stage, Mutu represented Romania from 2000, earning seventy-seven caps and scoring thirty-five goals, a joint record with Gheorghe Hagi. He participated in the UEFA European Championships in 2000 and 2008 and is a four-time winner of the Romanian Footballer of the Year award, trailing only Gheorghe Popescu and Gheorghe Hagi in total wins.
