His journey into racing began at the age of fourteen when he started karting, quickly progressing to single-seater racing in 2002. Sutil's early career saw him clinch the title in the Swiss Formula Ford series, setting the stage for his future endeavors.

In 2003, Sutil made his mark in the Formula BMW ADAC after a brief stint in Formula Masters Austria. His prowess continued to shine in the Formula 3 Euroseries, where he finished as the runner-up to the renowned Lewis Hamilton in 2005. The following year, he ventured to Japan, competing in the All-Japan Formula Three Championship and achieving a commendable third place in the prestigious Macau Grand Prix.

Adrian's association with the Midland F1 test team paved the way for his promotion to a race seat with the newly formed Spyker F1 team in 2007. He continued to race with the team, which later rebranded as Force India, from 2008 until 2011.
