Æthelred of Mercia

Æthelred of Mercia, born in six hundred and one, ascended to the throne in six hundred and seventy-five following the death of his brother, Wulfhere. His reign lasted until seven hundred and four, during which he made significant military incursions, including a notable invasion of Kent that resulted in the destruction of Rochester.

In six hundred and seventy-nine, Æthelred achieved a decisive victory against his brother-in-law, Ecgfrith of Northumbria, at the Battle of the Trent. This battle marked a turning point, effectively diminishing Northumbrian influence south of the Humber and restoring the Kingdom of Lindsey to Mercia.

A devout Christian, Æthelred was known for his piety and generosity towards the church. His reign coincided with the reorganization of the church's diocesan structure by Theodore, the Archbishop of Canterbury, which led to the establishment of several new sees in Mercia and Northumbria. He also supported Bishop Wilfrid of York during his exile, appointing him as Bishop of the Middle Angles.

Æthelred's personal life was marked by tragedy; his wife, Osthryth, a daughter of King Oswiu, was murdered under mysterious circumstances in six hundred and ninety-seven. In seven hundred and four, Æthelred abdicated the throne in favor of Coenred, the son of Wulfhere, and chose to become a monk at Bardney, a monastery he had founded with Osthryth. He was laid to rest there, leaving behind a legacy intertwined with both ecclesiastical and royal history.
