Æthelred the Unready

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Æthelred the Unready

Æthelred the Unready, born between nine hundred sixty-six and nine hundred sixty-nine, was the son of King Edgar and Queen Ælfthryth. His early life remains largely a mystery, but he ascended to the throne following the shocking assassination of his half-brother, King Edward the Martyr, in nine hundred seventy-eight. At a tender age of nine to twelve, Æthelred's reign began amidst a resurgence of Viking attacks that had been absent for a generation.

Initially, Æthelred's rule was guided by his father's advisers, including his mother. However, upon reaching maturity in the mid-980s, he dismissed these figures and appointed new advisers who led him to grant them property at the church's expense. This decision would haunt him, as he later perceived the Viking raids as divine retribution for his actions against the church.

The late 990s and early 1000s marked a period of relative success for Æthelred, characterized by significant cultural achievements in both Latin and Old English literature. Despite the turmoil of his reign, historians have reassessed his legacy, recognizing that while his rule ended in catastrophe, there were notable accomplishments during his earlier years.

As Viking raids intensified, Æthelred resorted to paying tribute to the invaders, culminating in the infamous St Brice's Day massacre of Danes in one thousand two. His reign faced further challenges when King Swein Forkbeard of Denmark conquered England in December of one thousand thirteen, forcing Æthelred to flee to Normandy. However, following Swein's death in February of one thousand fourteen, Æthelred returned to reclaim his throne.

Tragedy struck again in early one thousand fifteen when civil war erupted, exacerbated by the treachery of Eadric Streona. Despite attempts to unite with his son, Edmund Ironside, against Cnut, their efforts were hampered by suspicion and Æthelred's declining health. Æthelred passed away in April of one thousand sixteen, leaving Edmund to continue the struggle until his own death in December, paving the way for Cnut to become king of all England.
