He first gained international acclaim by winning a gold medal in the 25 m Rapid Fire Pistol event at the 1988 Summer Olympics, representing the USSR. His prowess continued to shine as he secured a silver medal at the 1992 Summer Olympics, this time competing for Latvia.

In addition to his Olympic success, Kuzmins showcased his exceptional skills by clinching the title at the 1986 World Championship in the 25 m Standard Pistol category. His dedication to the sport was honed at the Armed Forces sports society in Riga, where he trained rigorously to perfect his craft.
