Afonso Pena

Afonso Pena, born on November thirtieth, eighteen forty-seven, in Santa Bárbara, Minas Gerais, was a distinguished Brazilian lawyer, professor, and politician. He served as the sixth president of Brazil from nineteen hundred six until his untimely death in nineteen hundred nine. Pena was a notable figure in Brazilian politics, being the first president from Minas Gerais and the first to die in office. His political journey began in eighteen seventy-four when he joined the Liberal Party and was elected to the Provincial Assembly of Minas Gerais.

Before ascending to the presidency, Pena held various significant positions, including the fourth vice president of Brazil under Rodrigues Alves from nineteen hundred three to nineteen hundred six. His tenure as vice president was marked by his leadership in the Senate and his involvement in key ministries, including War, Agriculture, and Justice. After the proclamation of the Republic, he briefly withdrew from public life but was soon called back to help draft the new state constitution as a member of the Republican Party of Minas Gerais.

Pena's presidency began with an uncontested election, during which he implemented the Taubaté Agreement to stabilize the coffee economy. His administration was characterized by significant advancements, including the expansion of railways, modernization of the Brazilian Army, and support for expeditions in the Amazon rainforest. He also played a crucial role in international diplomacy, participating in the Hague Convention of nineteen hundred seven and addressing border issues with neighboring countries.

Despite his efforts to secure a successor, Pena's presidency was cut short by severe pneumonia in nineteen hundred nine. His legacy includes the establishment of Belo Horizonte as the state capital and the founding of the Faculty of Law of Minas Gerais.
