Agathangelos

Agathangelos, a prominent historian and writer, is best known for his work chronicling the life of Gregory the Illuminator, the first apostle of Armenia, who passed away around three hundred thirty-two. His historical account serves as a crucial source for understanding the Christianization of Armenia during the early fourth century, showcasing the significant cultural and religious transformations of the time.

The history attributed to Agathangelos was translated into Greek shortly after its composition, leading to further translations into Arabic and various secondary versions in Greek, Latin, and Ethiopic. The earliest surviving manuscript of his work is a palimpsest housed in the Mekhitarist library in Vienna, dating back to before the tenth century, with complete manuscripts emerging in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries.

Claiming to be a secretary to Tiridates III, the King of Armenia, Agathangelos's narrative intertwines historical facts with legendary elements, creating a cohesive story that has resonated with Armenian culture throughout the centuries. Despite debates regarding the exact timing of his writing, with some scholars suggesting a fifth-century origin, his contributions remain highly regarded.

Ghazar Parpetsi, another notable Armenian historian, recognized Agathangelos as the first writer of Armenian history, establishing a lineage of historical documentation that would influence future generations. The interplay between Agathangelos and his contemporaries, such as Buzand, highlights the evolving nature of historical writing in Armenia, with their works reflecting different periods and perspectives.
