Agnes Bernauer

Agnes Bernauer, born in the year fourteen ten, was a remarkable figure in the history of Bavaria, known primarily for her tumultuous relationship with Albert, who would later become Albert III, Duke of Bavaria. Their romance, however, was fraught with challenges, as Agnes was a commoner, and her status was deemed unworthy by Albert's father, Ernest, the ruling Duke at the time.

The conflict between father and son escalated as Ernest sought to protect the family's noble lineage. In a tragic turn of events, he orchestrated a campaign against Agnes, ultimately leading to her condemnation on charges of witchcraft. This dark chapter in her life culminated in her execution by drowning in the Danube River in the year fourteen thirty-five.

Agnes Bernauer's life and untimely death have inspired numerous artistic interpretations, most notably Friedrich Hebbel's poignant tragedy that bears her name. Additionally, the folk musical 'Die Bernauerin,' composed by Carl Orff, further immortalizes her story, reflecting the enduring fascination with her legacy.
