Agron of Illyria

Agron of Illyria was a prominent sovereign of the Ardiaean Kingdom during the third century BC, reigning approximately from two hundred fifty to two hundred thirty-one BC. As the son of Pleuratus II, Agron played a pivotal role in the resurgence of Illyrian power, successfully reclaiming southern Illyria, which had been under the influence of Epirus since the era of Pyrrhus.

His reign is marked by significant territorial expansion, as he extended Illyrian dominion over several key cities in the Adriatic region, including Corcyra, Epidamnos, and Pharos. Agron's military prowess is perhaps best exemplified by his decisive victory against the Aetolian League, a formidable state in western Greece, which solidified his reputation as a formidable leader.

Tragically, Agron's life was cut short around two hundred thirty-one BC, shortly after his triumph over the Aetolians. Following his death, his son Pinnes, born to his first wife Triteuta, ascended to the throne. However, the kingdom was effectively governed by Agron's second wife, Queen Teuta, who played a crucial role in the continuation of his legacy.
