Ahhotep I

Ahhotep I was an influential ancient Egyptian queen who lived around 1560 to 1530 BCE, marking a significant period at the transition from the Seventeenth to the Eighteenth Dynasty. She held numerous esteemed titles, including King's Daughter, King's Sister, Great (Royal) Wife, and King's Mother, reflecting her prominent status within the royal lineage.

Born to Queen Tetisheri and Pharaoh Senakhtenre Ahmose, Ahhotep I was likely both the sister and queen consort of Pharaoh Seqenenre Tao. Her life was marked by her remarkable leadership, particularly during her role as regent for her son, Ahmose I, until he was ready to ascend the throne. A stela discovered at Karnak highlights her capabilities as a ruler, showcasing her significant contributions to the governance of Egypt.

Ahhotep I's legacy endured long after her death, with the cult of Amenhotep I honoring her memory well into the Twenty-first Dynasty. The discovery of two coffins in the 19th century sparked debates regarding her identity and burial site, a topic that continues to intrigue scholars today. It is widely accepted that one of the coffins, found in Deir el-Bahari and later repurposed for a high priest, originally belonged to her.
