Ahmad ibn Rustah

Ahmad ibn Rustah Isfahani, commonly known as ibn Rusta, was a distinguished explorer and geographer of the tenth century, hailing from Rosta, Isfahan within the Abbasid Caliphate. His contributions to geographical literature are encapsulated in his renowned work, the Kitāb al-A‘lāq al-Nafīsa, or 'Book of Precious Records'. This compendium stands out for its detailed observations and insights into various regions, particularly Isfahan.

What sets ibn Rusta apart from his contemporaries is his reliance on firsthand experience and reliable sources when documenting Isfahan. Unlike many geographers of his time who often depended on second-hand accounts, ibn Rusta's intimate knowledge of the area allowed him to provide a rich and accurate description of the twenty districts, or rostaqs, of Isfahan. His observations are invaluable, offering details that are absent in the works of other geographers.

In his writings, ibn Rusta describes the town of Isfahan as perfectly circular, with a circumference of half a parasang. The town was fortified with walls that were defended by a hundred towers and featured four gates, showcasing the architectural prowess of the era. His meticulous documentation not only serves as a historical record but also as a testament to the vibrant culture and society of Isfahan during the tenth century.
