Ahmed Chalabi

Ahmed Chalabi, born on October 30, 1944, is a multifaceted figure in Iraqi politics, known for his roles as a politician, businessperson, and mathematician. He gained prominence as the founder of the Iraqi National Congress (INC) and served as the President of the Governing Council of Iraq, holding the title of the thirty-seventh Prime Minister of Iraq. His political journey was marked by controversy, including allegations of being an Iranian agent.

Chalabi's tenure in government included significant positions such as interim Minister of Oil in Iraq during two separate terms in 2005 and Deputy Prime Minister from May 2005 to May 2006. Despite his influential roles, he faced setbacks, including failing to secure a seat in the December 2005 elections and being excluded from the new cabinet announced in May 2006.

Initially supported by the CIA, Chalabi's relationship with the U.S. soured after the invasion of Iraq, leading to a raid by U.S. Special Forces on his residence. His involvement in the lead-up to the 2003 invasion was marked by the provision of questionable intelligence regarding weapons of mass destruction and alleged ties to al-Qaeda, which later proved to be largely fabricated.

Chalabi's reputation was further tarnished by his conviction for bank fraud in the Petra Bank scandal in Jordan, resulting in a twenty-two-year prison sentence in absentia. In subsequent years, various intelligence officials, including those from the U.S. and France, expressed concerns about his alleged connections to Iranian interests, solidifying his controversial legacy in Iraqi politics.
