Ahmet Kaya

Ahmet Kaya, born on October twenty-eighth, nineteen fifty-seven, was a prominent Turkish–Kurdish folk singer, composer, and poet. His music resonated deeply with the struggles and aspirations of the Kurdish people, making him a beloved figure in the region.

Despite his popularity, Kaya faced significant persecution from Turkish nationalist celebrities and authorities. This hostility ultimately led him to make the difficult decision to leave Turkey in an act of self-exile, seeking refuge in France.

In France, Kaya continued to create music that reflected his identity and experiences. Tragically, his life was cut short when he passed away from a heart attack. His legacy, however, endures through his powerful songs and the impact he had on Kurdish culture.

In February nineteen ninety-nine, Kaya was posthumously honored with the Musician of the Year Award during a controversial ceremony that featured Turkey's most popular singers. It was at this event that he expressed his desire to sing a song in Kurdish, a testament to his commitment to his roots and heritage.
