Ajmer Rode

Ajmer Rode, born on April tenth, nineteen forty, is a distinguished Canadian poet, translator, and writer who crafts his works in both Punjabi and English. His literary journey began with the non-fiction book 'Vishva Di Nuhar', published by Punjabi University in nineteen sixty-six. This innovative dialogue on Albert Einstein's theory of relativity drew inspiration from Plato's Republic and marked the beginning of a series of university publications focused on popular science and sociology.

Rode's contributions to Punjabi poetry are significant, with his first poetry collection 'Surti' being noted for its experimental nature and philosophical depth. Critic Dr. Attar Singh praised the work for expanding the boundaries of the Punjabi language and introducing a new direction in Punjabi poetry. His latest poetry endeavor, 'Leela', co-authored with Navtej Bharati, spans over one thousand pages and is celebrated as one of the remarkable literary achievements in Punjabi literature of the twentieth century.

In addition to his literary accomplishments, Rode is recognized as a pioneer of Punjabi theatre in Canada. He wrote and directed 'Dooja Passa', the first Punjabi play addressing the racism faced by minorities, followed by 'Komagata Maru', which highlights a pivotal racial incident in British Columbia's history. Although it lacked professional direction, the play garnered significant attention and inspired theatrical pursuits within the Indian-Canadian community. His English play 'Rebirth of Gandhi' was produced at Surrey Arts Centre in two thousand four, receiving a warm reception.

Rode's translation work includes 'The Last Flicker', an English version of the modern Punjabi classic 'Marhi Da Diva' by Gurdial Singh, published in nineteen ninety-three. He is currently part of an international team translating Sufi songs from Urdu, Punjabi, and Hindi into English, aiming to create a comprehensive multilingual collection of songs by the legendary Sufi singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. An active member of the Writers' Union of Canada, Rode has held various leadership roles, including chairing the Racial Minority Writers Committee and coordinating Vancouver's Punjabi Writers Forum.

Throughout his career, Rode has received numerous accolades, including the Best Overseas Punjabi Author award from the Punjab Languages Department in nineteen ninety-four. He was also honored by Guru Nanak Dev University as a 'Prominent Citizen (literature)' and received the 'Poet of Life' award from G.N. Engg. College in the same year.
