Akaki Shanidze

Akaki Shanidze, born on February 14, 1887, in Nogha, Samtredia, was a prominent Georgian linguist and philologist. His academic journey began at St. Petersburg University, where he graduated in 1909. Shanidze's contributions to the field of linguistics were profound, particularly in the study of the Georgian and Kartvelian languages, influencing both local and international scholarship.

In 1918, he played a pivotal role in establishing the Tbilisi State University, where he later became a Doctor of Philological Sciences in 1920 and a Professor the same year. His dedication to linguistic sciences earned him recognition as an Academician of the Georgian Academy of Sciences in 1941. Throughout his career, he mentored many scholars, including the Norwegian Kartvelologist Hans Vogt, furthering the understanding of Georgian linguistics.

Shanidze's scholarly work was not only extensive but also impactful, leading to numerous accolades. He was honored with three Orders of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labour, the Order of Friendship of Peoples, the Order of the Badge of Honour, the Jubilee Medal commemorating the centenary of Vladimir Il'ich Lenin's birth, and the Medal for Labour Valour.

His legacy continued until his passing in Tbilisi on March 29, 1987, leaving behind a rich heritage in the field of linguistics and a lasting influence on future generations of scholars.
