Akbar II

Akbar II, born on April twenty-second, seventeen sixty, was the last Mughal emperor to reign, holding the throne from eighteen oh six until his death in eighteen thirty-seven. As the second son of Shah Alam II, he was the father of Bahadur Shah II, who would later become the final emperor of the Mughal dynasty.

Despite his royal title, Akbar II wielded little real power, as the influence of the British East India Company grew increasingly dominant in India. In a notable diplomatic move, he appointed Ram Mohan Roy as an ambassador to Britain, bestowing upon him the title of Raja. This period marked a significant shift, as in eighteen thirty-five, the East India Company ceased to recognize itself as a subject of the Mughal Emperor, removing Persian inscriptions from its coins.

Akbar II is remembered for his efforts to promote unity between Hindus and Muslims, notably initiating the festival Phool Walon Ki Sair, which celebrated this cultural harmony. His legacy is intertwined with the rich tapestry of Indian history, reflecting the complexities of a declining empire amidst rising colonial power.

His final resting place is located next to the dargah of the revered thirteenth-century Sufi saint Qutbuddin Bakhtiar Kaki in Mehrauli, a site that continues to attract visitors and devotees.
