Al-ʻIjliyyah

Al-ʻIjliyyah, an esteemed astronomer of the 10th century, was a prominent figure in the field of astrolabe manufacturing. Active in Aleppo, located in present-day northern Syria, she contributed significantly to the scientific advancements of her time.

Although she is often referred to in contemporary literature as Mariam al-Asṭurlābiyya, it is important to note that the name 'Mariam' does not appear in the sole historical source documenting her life. This has led to some ambiguity regarding her identity, yet her legacy as a skilled maker of astrolabes remains undisputed.
