Al Davis

Allen R. Davis, born on July 4, 1929, was a prominent figure in American football, known for his multifaceted roles as an executive, coach, and owner. He became the managing general partner and principal owner of the Oakland Raiders in 1972, a position he held until his passing in 2011. His leadership spanned nearly four decades, during which he transformed the Raiders into one of the most successful franchises in the National Football League (NFL).

Davis's journey with the Raiders began as head coach from 1963 to 1965, followed by a part-ownership from 1966 to 1971, all while the team was part of the American Football League (AFL). His influence extended beyond the field; he served as the AFL commissioner in 1966, showcasing his commitment to the sport.

Under his guidance, the Raiders thrived, particularly in the 1970s and 1980s, achieving three Super Bowl titles and becoming perennial playoff contenders. His famous motto, 'Just win, baby,' encapsulated his relentless pursuit of excellence. In recognition of his contributions, Davis was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1992.

Beyond his achievements in football, Davis was a pioneer in civil rights, refusing to allow the Raiders to play in cities that enforced segregation in accommodations for players. He made history by hiring the first black head coach in the modern NFL, Art Shell, as well as the first female chief executive, Amy Trask, and the first Latino head coach, Tom Flores. His unique career path included roles as a scout, assistant general manager, general manager, assistant coach, head coach, commissioner, and team owner, making him a singular figure in the history of American football.
