Al-Farghani

Al-Farghani, also known as Alfraganus in the West, was a prominent astronomer, mathematician, and astrologer during the Abbasid era, flourishing in Baghdad around the ninth century. His contributions to the field of astronomy were significant, making him one of the most renowned astronomers of his time.

Among his many works, Al-Farghani's most celebrated is the 'Kitāb fī Jawāmiʿ ʿIlm al-Nujūmi', which translates to 'Elements of astronomy on the celestial motions'. This extensive summary of Ptolemy's Almagest not only compiled existing knowledge but also included revised and more accurate experimental data, greatly influencing subsequent generations of scientists.

His impact extended beyond theoretical astronomy; Al-Farghani also played a vital role as an engineer, overseeing construction projects on rivers in Cairo, Egypt. His expertise in both fields showcased his versatility and commitment to advancing scientific understanding.

Interestingly, his calculations were utilized by Christopher Columbus during his voyages to America, although Columbus mistakenly interpreted Arabic miles as Roman miles. The lunar crater Alfraganus is a lasting tribute to his legacy, ensuring that his contributions to science are remembered.
