Al Jensen, born on November twenty-seventh, nineteen fifty-eight, is a distinguished former Canadian ice hockey goaltender. His journey in professional hockey began when he was selected thirty-first overall by the Detroit Red Wings during the nineteen seventy-eight NHL Entry Draft. Although his time with the Red Wings was brief, playing only one game, it set the stage for a more prominent role with the Washington Capitals.
In July nineteen eighty-one, Jensen was traded to the Capitals in exchange for Mark Lofthouse. This move proved pivotal for his career, as he flourished into a starting goaltender. Jensen's contributions were instrumental in leading the Capitals to their inaugural playoff appearance during the nineteen eighty-two to eighty-three NHL season. His performance continued to shine, culminating in a co-win of the prestigious William M. Jennings Trophy alongside teammate Pat Riggin the following season.
Jensen's tenure with the Capitals spanned nearly six seasons, after which he was traded to the Los Angeles Kings during the mid-point of the nineteen eighty-six to eighty-seven NHL season in exchange for defenseman Garry Galley. Following his time with the Kings, he played one season with the New Haven Nighthawks in the AHL before retiring from professional play.
Throughout his NHL career, Jensen participated in one hundred seventy-nine games, achieving a commendable regular season record of ninety-five wins, fifty-three losses, and eighteen ties. His legacy as a skilled goaltender remains a significant part of hockey history.
