Al Jourgensen, born on October ninth, nineteen fifty-eight, is a Cuban-American singer, musician, and music producer whose career has significantly shaped the landscape of industrial music. He is best known as the frontman and lyricist of the influential industrial metal band Ministry, which he founded in nineteen eighty-one. Over the years, Jourgensen has remained the sole constant member of the band, leading various Ministry-related projects such as Revolting Cocks, Lard, and Buck Satan and the 666 Shooters.
Born in Havana shortly before the Cuban Revolution, Jourgensen moved to the United States at the age of three, growing up primarily in Chicago and Breckenridge, Colorado. His passion for music ignited early, leading him to participate in several short-lived bands and even perform briefly with the drag performer Divine. His musical journey took a significant turn when he formed Ministry, garnering attention with the band's debut album, With Sympathy, released in nineteen eighty-three.
Throughout the late nineteen eighties, Jourgensen's work with Ministry evolved, particularly with the critically acclaimed albums The Land of Rape and Honey in nineteen eighty-eight and The Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Taste in nineteen eighty-nine. The early nineties marked a peak in his career with the release of Psalm 69: The Way to Succeed and the Way to Suck Eggs in nineteen ninety-two, which brought mainstream success. However, this period was also marred by struggles with substance abuse, leading to a decline in his creative output and a battle with depression.
In two thousand five, Jourgensen took a significant step in his career by establishing his own record label, 13th Planet Records, through which he released several Ministry albums until the early twenty-tens. As of twenty twenty-five, he and Ministry are signed to Cleopatra Records, continuing to influence and inspire new generations of musicians.
