Al-Khazini

Al-Khazini, born in the year one thousand seventy-seven, was a remarkable Iranian astronomer, mechanician, and physicist of Byzantine Greek descent, who flourished during the Seljuk Empire. His contributions to the field of astronomy are monumental, particularly his astronomical tables, known as Zīj al-Sanjarī, which he composed under the patronage of Sultan Sanjar in the year one thousand one hundred fifteen. These tables are regarded as one of the most significant works in mathematical astronomy of the medieval period.

Renowned as one of the greatest scientists of his time, Al-Khazini was also celebrated for his exceptional craftsmanship in scientific instruments. He earned the title of 'the physicist of all physicists' due to his innovative approaches and original observations. His work included providing precise positions of fixed stars and developing time-equations for the latitude of Marv, where he conducted his research.

Among his many achievements, Al-Khazini devised the world's most accurate instrument for weighing ordinary objects, which also allowed for the determination of specific gravities and the examination of alloy compositions. His invention, known as 'The Comprehensive Balance,' was noted for its extraordinary accuracy of one in sixty thousand, a feat that has been validated by modern studies.

In addition to his work on balances, Al-Khazini authored an encyclopedia titled The Book of the Balance of Wisdom, published in the year one thousand one hundred twenty-one. This comprehensive work delved into theories of density, specific gravities of various materials, and principles of equilibrium, establishing itself as one of the most sophisticated texts on weighing in the medieval Islamic world.
