Al-Mahani

Al-Mahani was a distinguished Persian mathematician and astronomer, born in the ancient city of Mahan, which is located in present-day Kermān, Iran. His intellectual pursuits flourished in Baghdad during the era of the Abbasid Caliphate, a time renowned for its advancements in science and mathematics.

Among his notable contributions to mathematics are his insightful commentaries on the works of great thinkers such as Euclid, Archimedes, and Menelaus. He engaged deeply with Archimedes' problem of dividing a sphere into two volumes of a specified ratio, a challenge that would not be resolved until the tenth century by the mathematician Abū Ja'far al-Khāzin.

In addition to his mathematical endeavors, Al-Mahani made significant strides in astronomy. His sole surviving work in this field focused on the calculation of azimuths, showcasing his dedication to precise astronomical observations. He notably claimed that his predictions regarding the timing of three consecutive lunar eclipses were accurate to within half an hour, reflecting his keen observational skills and understanding of celestial events.
