Al-Muqtadir

Al-Muqtadir bi'Llāh, born on November thirteenth in the year eight hundred ninety-five, ascended to the throne as the eighteenth caliph of the Abbasid Caliphate at the tender age of thirteen. His rise to power was marked by palace intrigues, and he quickly faced challenges from supporters of the more seasoned Abdallah ibn al-Mu'tazz. However, a coup attempt in December of nine hundred eight was swiftly quelled, allowing Al-Muqtadir to maintain his position.

Despite enjoying a longer reign than any of his predecessors, Al-Muqtadir displayed a notable disinterest in governance. His administration was characterized by frequent changes in viziers, with fourteen different heads of government recorded during his rule. This instability hampered effective administration, while the Abbasid harem, under the influence of his mother Shaghab, played a significant role in political affairs, often determining the fates of various officials.

Al-Muqtadir's reign, following a period of consolidation under his father al-Mu'tadid and half-brother al-Muktafi, marked the beginning of a rapid decline for the Abbasid Caliphate. The treasury he inherited was soon depleted, leading to persistent financial difficulties. During his rule, Ifriqiya fell to the Fatimids, although the commander-in-chief Mu'nis al-Muzaffar successfully defended Egypt against their advances. Meanwhile, the Hamdanids gained autonomy in the Jazira, and the Qarmatians emerged as a significant threat, culminating in their capture of Mecca in nine hundred twenty-nine.

In February of nine hundred twenty-nine, a palace revolt temporarily replaced Al-Muqtadir with his brother al-Qahir, but this new regime failed to establish itself and Al-Muqtadir was restored shortly thereafter. By this time, Mu'nis al-Muzaffar had assumed near-dictatorial powers. In an attempt to regain control, Al-Muqtadir sought to eliminate Mu'nis in nine hundred thirty-two. However, this led to a confrontation in Baghdad, where Al-Muqtadir met his demise on October thirty-first of that year.
