Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Al-Mustakfi

Abu al-Qasim Abd Allah ibn Ali, known by his regnal name al-Mustakfi, was born on November eleventh, nine hundred eight. He ascended to the position of Abbasid caliph in Baghdad, ruling from nine hundred forty-four to nine hundred forty-six. As a younger son of Caliph al-Muktafi, al-Mustakfi found himself in a complex political landscape, marked by rivalry with the line of Caliph al-Muqtadir, whose reign from nine hundred eight to nine hundred forty-four saw the Abbasid Caliphate teetering on the brink of collapse.

His rise to power was orchestrated by Tuzun, a formidable Turkish general who deposed and blinded the previous caliph, al-Muttaqi. This tumultuous period left a power vacuum that al-Mustakfi attempted to navigate. Following Tuzun's death in August nine hundred forty-five, he sought to reclaim some autonomy, even initiating anti-Shi'a measures in a bid to strengthen his position.

However, the political instability allowed the Buyids to seize control of Baghdad. Faced with this new reality, al-Mustakfi was compelled to acknowledge the Buyids as legitimate rulers, granting them regnal titles. His tenure was marred by accusations of plotting against them, leading to his deposition in January or March of nine hundred forty-six.

In the years that followed, al-Mustakfi spent his life in imprisonment, a stark contrast to the power he once wielded. His legacy continued through his son, who attempted to claim the caliphate around nine hundred sixty-eight, though this effort ultimately proved unsuccessful.
