Al-Nasir Muhammad

Al-Nasir Muhammad, born in the year one thousand two hundred eighty-five, was a prominent Sultan of Egypt and a significant figure in the Mamluk dynasty. His reign spanned several periods, specifically from one thousand two hundred ninety-three to one thousand two hundred ninety-four, one thousand two hundred ninety-nine to one thousand three hundred nine, and finally from one thousand three hundred ten until his death in one thousand three hundred forty-one.

During his initial reign, Al-Nasir faced considerable challenges, being overshadowed by powerful figures such as Kitbugha and al-Shuja‘i. However, he emerged more assertive in his second reign, where he contended with the influences of Baibars and Salar. Determined to reclaim his authority, he took decisive actions, including the execution of Baibars and the acceptance of Salar's resignation as vice Sultan.

Al-Nasir Muhammad was known for his strategic appointments, favoring non-Mamluks who demonstrated loyalty to him for key military roles. This approach often led to the removal of capable officers whose allegiance he questioned. In a notable move to alleviate the burdens on common citizens, he annulled various taxes and surcharges that had been imposed for the benefit of the emirs and officials.

To combat corruption within his administration, he appointed Emir Ibn al-Waziri, a figure renowned for his strict stance against malfeasance, as the head of the Court of Justice. Through these reforms and his military leadership, Al-Nasir Muhammad left a lasting impact on the governance of Egypt during a tumultuous period.
