Al-Nuwayri

Al-Nuwayri, born on April fifth, 1279, was a distinguished Egyptian Muslim historian and civil servant during the Bahri Mamluk dynasty. His contributions to the fields of history and literature are profound, particularly through his extensive work as an encyclopedist, calligrapher, poet, and literary scholar.

He is best known for his monumental compilation, titled The Ultimate Ambition in the Arts of Erudition (نهاية الأرب في فنون الأدب, Nihāyat al-arab fī funūn al-adab), which spans an impressive nine thousand pages. This encyclopedia, initiated around the year 1314 and completed in 1333, covers a wide array of subjects including zoology, anatomy, history, and chronology, reflecting the rich intellectual landscape of the Mamluk era.

In addition to his encyclopedic work, Al-Nuwayri made significant contributions to the understanding of the Mongol conquests in Syria, providing valuable insights into this pivotal period in history. His writings not only document events but also offer a glimpse into the cultural and scholarly milieu of his time.
