Al-Qalqashandi

Shihāb al-Dīn Abū 'l-Abbās Aḥmad ibn ‘Alī ibn Aḥmad ‘Abd Allāh al-Fazārī al-Shāfiʿī, more commonly known as al-Qalqashandī, was born in the year thirteen fifty-five in the Nile Delta region of Egypt. He emerged as a prominent figure during the Mamluk period, recognized for his extensive contributions as a mathematician, writer, encyclopedist, and politician.

Al-Qalqashandī's career was marked by his role as a Scribe of the Scroll, or Katib al-Darj, within the Mamluk chancery in Cairo. This position allowed him to engage deeply with the administrative workings of his time, and he utilized his skills to compile a vast body of knowledge.

His most significant work, the encyclopedic masterpiece titled Ṣubḥ al-Aʿshá, stands as a testament to his intellectual prowess. This voluminous text encompasses a wide array of subjects, reflecting the rich tapestry of knowledge that characterized the era.

Al-Qalqashandī's legacy endures through his writings, which not only served as a resource for contemporaries but also laid the groundwork for future scholars. He passed away in the year fourteen eighteen, leaving behind a rich intellectual heritage.
