Ala al-Din Tekish

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Ala al-Din Tekish

Ala al-Din Tekish, born in the year one thousand one hundred thirty-two, emerged as a formidable military leader and the Shah of the Khwarazmian Empire from one thousand one hundred seventy-two until his death in one thousand two hundred. He was the son of Il-Arslan and faced significant challenges during his reign, particularly from his brother, Sultan Shah, who governed a principality in Khorasan.

Upon the death of Sultan Shah in one thousand one hundred ninety-three, Tekish inherited his brother's state, solidifying his power in the region. His name, Tekish, translates to 'he who strikes in battle' in Turkic, a fitting moniker for a leader who would go on to achieve notable military victories.

In one thousand one hundred ninety-four, Tekish formed an alliance with Caliph Al-Nasir and successfully defeated the Seljuk sultan of Hamadan, Toghrul III, expanding his territories significantly. However, following this victory, he broke ties with the Caliphate, leading to tensions that nearly escalated into war. Ultimately, in one thousand one hundred ninety-eight, the Caliph recognized him as the Sultan of Iran, Khorasan, and Turkestan.

Tekish's reign came to an end in one thousand two hundred when he succumbed to a peritonsillar abscess. His legacy continued through his son, Ala ad-Din Muhammad, who succeeded him as the ruler of the Khwarazmian Empire.
