Renowned for his innovative narrative structures, Resnais's films often delve into the intricate relationships between consciousness, memory, and imagination.

After honing his skills as a film editor in the mid-1940s, Resnais transitioned to directing, creating impactful short films such as Night and Fog in nineteen fifty-six, a seminal documentary that addressed the harrowing realities of Nazi concentration camps. His foray into feature films in the late nineteen fifties solidified his reputation with masterpieces like Hiroshima mon amour in nineteen fifty-nine, Last Year at Marienbad in nineteen sixty-one, Muriel in nineteen sixty-three, and Je t'aime, je t'aime in nineteen sixty-eight, all of which employed unconventional narrative techniques to explore themes of troubled memory and the imagined past.
