Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Alben W. Barkley

Alben W. Barkley, born on November twenty-fourth, eighteen seventy-seven, was a prominent American lawyer and politician hailing from Kentucky. He served as the thirty-fifth vice president of the United States from nineteen forty-nine to nineteen fifty-three under President Harry S. Truman. Barkley's political career began in nineteen oh-five when he was elected to local offices, and by nineteen twelve, he had ascended to the U.S. House of Representatives.

A staunch liberal Democrat, Barkley was a supporter of President Woodrow Wilson's New Freedom domestic agenda and foreign policy. His political journey included a narrow defeat in the Kentucky Democratic gubernatorial primary in nineteen twenty-three, but he rebounded by unseating Republican senator Richard P. Ernst in nineteen twenty-six. As a senator, he championed the New Deal during the Great Depression and succeeded Senate Majority Leader Joseph Taylor Robinson after Robinson's death in nineteen thirty-seven.

During World War II, Barkley gained significant influence over domestic policies as President Franklin D. Roosevelt focused on foreign affairs. Despite resigning as floor leader after a veto of the Revenue Act of nineteen forty-three, he was unanimously re-elected as Majority Leader by Democratic senators. His close working relationship with Truman proved beneficial, especially as he energized delegates at the nineteen forty-eight Democratic National Convention, leading to their surprising victory against the Republican ticket.

As vice president, Barkley played a crucial role in the Truman administration, particularly during the Korean War. However, when Truman announced he would not seek re-election in nineteen fifty-two, Barkley attempted to launch his own presidential campaign but ultimately withdrew due to concerns about his age. He remains the most recent Democratic vice president to never receive the party's presidential nomination. After a brief retirement, he returned to public life, defeating incumbent Republican senator John Sherman Cooper in nineteen fifty-four. Barkley passed away from a heart attack on April thirtieth, nineteen fifty-six.
