His literary journey began with the publication of his first collection of stories, The Dust on the Grass, in nineteen fifty-five, which garnered the attention of notable figures like Leonardo Sciascia. Sciascia's endorsement led to Bevilacqua's stories being featured in the Journal of Parma, marking the start of his literary acclaim.

In nineteen sixty-one, Bevilacqua published his inaugural book of poems, Friendship Lost, followed by his breakthrough novel, Caliph, in nineteen sixty-four. The novel introduced readers to Irene Corsini, a character reflecting Bevilacqua's own vibrant spirit, and is celebrated as one of the strongest female figures in Italian literature. His subsequent work, This Kind of Love, not only won the prestigious Campiello Prize in nineteen sixty-six but also saw successful adaptations into film, with the film version winning Best Film at Cannes.

Throughout his career, Bevilacqua directed seven films from nineteen seventy to nineteen ninety-nine, with his film Lady Caliph being showcased at the Cannes Film Festival in nineteen seventy-one. His literary prowess extended beyond Italy, with translations of his works reaching audiences in Europe, the United States, Brazil, China, and Japan. In two thousand ten, his seven 'stories' were included in the esteemed Novels volume of the I Meridiani series.

Alberto Bevilacqua passed away in Rome on September ninth, two thousand thirteen, at the age of seventy-nine due to cardiac arrest, following a prolonged hospitalization for heart failure. His legacy as a writer, poet, and filmmaker continues to resonate in the world of literature and cinema.
