Alberto Hurtado

Alberto Hurtado, born Luis Alberto Hurtado Cruchaga on January 22, 1901, was a prominent Chilean Jesuit priest and social worker known for his profound impact on society. With a rich Basque heritage, he dedicated his life to serving the underprivileged and advocating for social justice. His multifaceted career included roles as a lawyer, journalist, trade unionist, university teacher, and writer, showcasing his commitment to both faith and social reform.

In 1944, Hurtado founded the Hogar de Cristo foundation, a pivotal initiative aimed at providing shelter and support to the homeless and marginalized in Chile. This organization has continued to thrive, embodying his vision of compassion and service to those in need. His work not only transformed lives but also inspired countless others to engage in social work and community service.

Hurtado's legacy was further solidified when he was canonized on October 23, 2005, by Pope Benedict XVI, making him the second saint of Chile. His life and mission continue to resonate, reminding us of the power of faith and action in addressing social issues.
