Aleksandar Đorđević, born on August 26, 1967, is a distinguished Serbian basketball coach and former player, renowned for his significant contributions to the sport. He recently held the position of head coach for the senior men’s team of China, showcasing his expertise and leadership in basketball.
During his illustrious playing career, Đorđević was a formidable point guard, standing at 1.88 m (6'2") and weighing 90 kg (198 lb). He played a pivotal role in leading Partizan to its first EuroLeague title in 1992, earning a spot on the All-Final Four Team. His exceptional skills on the court earned him the prestigious Mister Europa Player of the Year award twice, in 1994 and 1995.
Đorđević's international accolades are equally impressive. He represented the senior national teams of SFR Yugoslavia and later FR Yugoslavia, participating in a total of 108 games. His achievements include winning gold medals at the EuroBasket tournaments in 1991, 1995, and 1997, where he was named the Most Valuable Player, as well as at the 1998 FIBA World Championship.
In recognition of his outstanding athleticism, Đorđević received the Golden Badge award for the Best Athlete of FR Yugoslavia in 1995 and was honored as the Sportsman of the Year by the Yugoslav Olympic Committee. His legacy in basketball was further solidified in 2008 when he was named one of the 50 Greatest EuroLeague Contributors.
Notably, Đorđević is celebrated for his two iconic game-winning shots: one in the 1992 EuroLeague Final and another during the 1997 EuroBasket match against Croatia. Uniquely, he is the only individual to have won medals at the Summer Olympic Games, the FIBA World Cup, and the FIBA EuroBasket, both as a player and a head coach.
