Aleksandar Vučić, born on March fifth, nineteen seventy, in Belgrade, is a prominent Serbian politician and lawyer. He has been serving as the President of Serbia since two thousand seventeen, following a distinguished political career that began in nineteen ninety-three. Vučić is a founding member of the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), which he co-founded in two thousand eight after leaving the far-right Serbian Radical Party (SRS), where he had held various significant positions, including secretary-general and minister of information.
Vučić's political journey saw him rise to the role of First Deputy Prime Minister from two thousand twelve to two thousand fourteen, and subsequently, he became the Prime Minister of Serbia from two thousand fourteen to two thousand seventeen. His leadership was marked by a strong influence over the government, even when not holding the title of Prime Minister, as he led the largest party in the coalition government formed with the Socialist Party of Serbia.
During his tenure, Vučić played a crucial role in the EU-mediated dialogue between Serbia and Kosovo, advocating for the implementation of the Brussels Agreement aimed at normalizing relations. His government focused on economic reforms, including the privatization of state businesses and liberalization of the economy, which led to the opening of the first chapters in Serbia's EU accession process in two thousand fifteen.
As President, Vučić initiated the Open Balkan project, promoting economic cooperation among Balkan countries, and signed agreements to normalize economic relations with Kosovo. While he is recognized for fostering economic growth and pragmatic policies, his administration has faced criticism for authoritarian tendencies, including restrictions on press freedom and civil liberties.
