Aleksandr Aleksandrov

Aleksandr Aleksandrov, born on September seventeenth, 1783, was a remarkable figure in Russian history, known for his dual roles as a writer and military personnel. His life took a dramatic turn at the age of twenty-three when he fled his home to enlist in an uhlan regiment, adopting the name Alexander Sokolov and presenting himself as a male soldier. This bold decision marked the beginning of a decade-long military career during which he served from 1806 to 1816, participating in the Napoleonic Wars.

During his service, Aleksandrov distinguished himself on the battlefield, earning the prestigious Cross of St. George for his bravery. His experiences as a cavalry soldier provided rich material for his later literary endeavors. After his military career, he penned a memoir titled "Notes of Alexsandrov," which is recognized as one of the earliest autobiographies in the Russian language. However, to his dismay, publishers altered the title to "Notes of N.A. Durova," and it eventually became known as The Cavalry Maiden.

Historians have often categorized Aleksandrov as a female wartime cross-dresser, but contemporary scholars have begun to view him through a different lens, recognizing him as a transgender man. His life and work continue to spark discussions about gender identity and representation in history, making him a significant figure in both military and literary circles.
