Aleksei Yeliseyev

Aleksei Yeliseyev, born on July thirteenth, nineteen thirty-four, is a distinguished retired Soviet cosmonaut known for his remarkable contributions to space exploration. He served as a flight engineer on three significant missions within the Soyuz programme: Soyuz 5, Soyuz 8, and Soyuz 10. Notably, during the Soyuz 5 mission in nineteen sixty-nine, he achieved the distinction of performing the world's eighth spacewalk, marking a pivotal moment in the history of human spaceflight.

Yeliseyev's heritage is deeply intertwined with the tumultuous history of the Soviet Union. His father, a Lithuanian named Kuraitis, tragically perished in the Soviet Gulag, branded as an enemy of the people. In light of this, Aleksei chose to adopt his mother's surname, Yeliseyev, leading some to regard him as a Lithuanian cosmonaut, reflecting the complex identity shaped by his family's past.

His academic journey began at the prestigious Bauman Higher Technical School, from which he graduated in nineteen fifty-seven. He furthered his education with postgraduate studies at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, completing his studies in nineteen sixty-two. Following his academic achievements, Yeliseyev joined Sergey Korolev's design bureau as an engineer, where his expertise eventually led to his selection for cosmonaut training.

After retiring from the space programme in nineteen eighty-five, Yeliseyev transitioned to an administrative role at the Bauman school, where he dedicated several years to shaping the next generation of engineers before fully retiring.
